Addison Gallery is thrilled to be showcasing the work of Christina Gschwantner. Her paintings invite viewers into a world where spontaneity and structure coexist in striking harmony. Gschwantner masterfully blends the expressive freedom of Art Informel with the compositional clarity of Minimal Art, creating works that are both deeply emotive and visually precise. Through rhythmic brushwork, layered textures, and bold color relationships, her paintings come alive—radiating movement, energy, and balance.
Each composition feels like a living system, where individual gestures interact and find their place within a larger whole. This tension between chaos and order gives her work a rare vitality, as if the paintings are continuously evolving in dialogue with the viewer.
Born in Vienna, Gschwantner studied painting and graphic arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. During her studies, she completed residencies in Greece, Mexico, and New York, followed by a year-long artist residency in Australia. She is the recipient of scholarships from both the Sussmann Foundation and the University of Applied Arts. Since 2003, she has worked as an independent artist, exhibiting internationally.
Addison Gallery is honored to present this dynamic body of work, which embodies both the discipline and freedom that define Gschwantner’s singular artistic voice.
“In my art, I explore the balance between vibrant expression and minimalist simplicity. Whether through bold colors or subdued tones, each piece reflects a blend of introspection and assertiveness, mirroring the ebb and flow of inspiration. Using raw linen without priming, I engage directly with texture, allowing the process to unfold organically.
Whether abstract or figurative, my works evolve over time, with layers of paint revealing and concealing elements, inviting viewers to explore the depth within.”
