Maura Segal: The Line Unleashed

On the surface, my canvases seem as though they consist of only line and shape applied with a paint brush, when in fact as you step forward the lines are placed on by hand: using hand-cut, thin strips of paper. I also adhere different hand-cut shapes of paper before the painting even commences to create texture and depth to my work.

A CONTRAST OF SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY

An exhibition of exclusive new work for the Fall Collection, Maura Segal's "The Line Unleashed" represents a further deconstruction of her beautifully minimalist paintings. Calming compositions of one or two fields of color subtly reveal intricate patterns of raised shapes in her backgrounds. The complexity of these designs is juxtaposed by the simplicity of her palette, as neutral tones intersect with soft shades of color, and playful lines in hand-laid paper meander across her canvases in soft curves that explore the confines of each piece.
